No One Wanted To Marry These Celebs: Here’s Why

Though the idea is drilled into our heads basically since we are born, not everyone gets married.

For some reason or another, people either choose to or are forced to stay single forever; and not just regular people, but celebrities as well. These celebrity women have never gotten married and most likely will never tie the knot for many varying reasons.

This is one celebrity who is very open about her feelings towards marriage, she thinks it’s highly outdated, and even called it “gross and crazy.” In the past, Sarah has been romantically linked to Jimmy Kimmel and is in a relationship with Michael Sheen, but she would never have been interested in tying the knot with either. “If you’re getting married today, it’s the equivalent of joining a country club that doesn’t allow blacks or Jews.”

Kylie is a celebrity who loves her freedom. While she has been linked to many famous men and was even engaged to Joshua Sasse until quite recently, she is beginning to think that she is just not the marrying kind. The Sunday Times reported that she values her space and freedom too much to tie herself to anyone else. That means more to her than the strong foundations of a wedding ring and the commitment of marriage.

We all remember the heartbreak when Mary-Louise Parker was left by Billy Crudup while she was seven months pregnant with their child. Billy had started a relationship with none other than Clare Danes, and Mary-Louise was left alone to raise their children. You can imagine how this would leave any woman feeling about commitment or trust, and it’s no wonder that this kick-ass lady is doing such a fantastic job of rocking the single mom world on her own.

For many people, the over-commercialization of marriage is what puts them off taking the plunge. The money, the attention, the sheer decadence of a wedding, it’s not for everyone. Chelsea Handler famously compared marriage to murder! But later on, she took back some of her harsh words, saying “I realize now that you can be committed to someone without commercialization and all that nonsense. So now I’d get married.” And what a lucky guy that would be!

If we had to imagine someone being happily unmarried, the last person who would come to mind would be the image of Charlotte York from Sex and the City. On screen, the character spent years tracking down the perfect husband, but off-screen, the actress isn’t that interested. She does have a daughter, Gemma Rose and wouldn’t want to share her unless it was with “someone so awesome.” Her career as an animal rights activist and her daughter is all she needs right now.

Just because you know that marriage isn’t the right choice for you, doesn’t mean you need to know exactly why. Charlize Theron told Piers Morgan that she’s never known the answer to her single status for herself. “Marriage was never something that was important to me. I don’t know the exact reason for that.” The famous actress has two children, both adopted, but has never seen a relationship through to marriage.

Imagine being happily coupled up with Mr Johnny Depp himself for well over a decade, but never tying that knot. Vanessa Paradis opened up about it to the Sunday Times in 2004, while the pair were still together. “We’ve never said we don’t want to get married, but we’re neither opposed to it nor excited about it. You know, we might do it for the kids one day. But we are more than married: we have two children. It’s not like we need to.”

Some people believe that if you’re not interested in marriage, you must shy clear of any kind of commitment when it comes to love. But Jacqueline Bisset appears to be a serial monogamist, just without the wedding rings! She has had four very serious committed relationships which have lasted a lot longer than many marriages, three seven-year relationships and one which lasted fourteen years! She blames bad habits as the reason why she couldn’t have married any of them.

Andrea Tantaros is a major name in the world of politics and television – in fact, she is an esteemed political analyst and commentator and has previously worked for the Fox News Channel. However, Andrea sued the channel in 2016 after suffering abuse from other members of the team and became embroiled in a rather public lawsuit. Although she has dated a few notable faces, including Dave Navarro, Andrea Tantaros has never met someone she wants to settle down with.

Hang on a second, (we hear you say!) Isn’t Goldie Hawn happily married to none other than Kurt Russell? This power couple has been together for more than 30 years, and are one of the most loved-up and committed Hollywood staples. But they actually have never got married, despite the three decades of love and their four children. Goldie Hawn told CBS that they love their lives together and don’t see any reason to walk down the aisle.

Sometimes, when a celebrity has a baby, the media and the public expect marriage to follow along quickly. But with Kimberly Stewart, she had other plans! In 2001, she had a child with Benecio Del Toro, and the pair were not even in any kind of relationship. Kimberly is not against marriage at all though, and was even quoted recently as saying that in this next stage of her life she wants “a nice husband, a good career, and babies.”

Robin and Amber Laign have been together for well over a decade, but still live in different homes, choosing not to live together or get married. There has been a few rumors of secret weddings over the years, but this is all just speculation and the pair remain happily together, but with their own space too. We love the couple, proving that happy comes in all shapes and sizes, and doesn’t rely on a trip down the aisle.

Anita Hill and Chuck Malone have been together for more than 10 years, but they have no desire to even live together, let alone tie the knot. The couple is really happy, with Anita saying that they have a “really good relationship”. She says that it’s not that they have anything against marriage, it’s just that they never decided to do it.

It’s no secret that the Kardashian Klan is one of the most famous families in the world, and Kourtney Kardashian’s love life has been the main source of attention for many Keeping Up With the Kardashian fans. Her intense on-and-off relationship with Scott Disick lasted a whopping ten years and brought about three beautiful children – but the pair never married. In fact, Kourtney and Scott are no longer an item, but simply co-parenting and doing their own thing. Well… kinda.

Edie made a name for herself as Carmela Soprano in The Soprano’s, but this mob wife never wanted to be a wife off screen. Her parents’ divorce might have something to do with it, but she also says that “in my life, in general, I don’t see a lot of marriages that look appealing to me.” She believes strongly in having love in her life, and has adopted two daughters so she certainly adores being a mom, but as for a husband? Not her scene.

Allison Janney isn’t looking to take herself off the dating scene any time soon, as evidenced by her interview to E! Magazine in 2014. , “I want to be a player! I’m still single! I want to feel sexy and young and pretty for as long as I can.” Playing the field is a lot of fun, and we can see why gorgeous celebrities want to live the party lifestyle as much as possible! When love comes a’knocking though, you might just change your mind!

Of course, we all know who Elizabeth I of England was, and it’s fair to say that she was one of the most popular and progressive leaders the country has ever had. However, Elizabeth was often called ‘The Virgin Queen’ because she had no time for men or marriage. In fact, she famously quoted that she was married to her country, and wanted all of her time and energy spent on creating a stable country for all of her residents.

Shonda is the undisputed Queen of Television, with mighty shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and Private Practice under her writers belt, as well as producing How to Get Away with Murder. She has three children, but never sees herself getting married, as it would change her life too much. If you know Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda modelled that character on herself. She says that if she got married she “could not have the life that she created for herself”.

Let’s be honest, Susan B. Anthony is one of the most poignant women and feminists to come out of the United States of America. This social reformer and famous women’s rights activists is well-known for her incessant efforts to abolish slavery and allow women the right to vote. Because of her strong views surrounding men, Susan made a vow to herself to stay single, and not let a man dictate whether she would get married or not. So, she remained unmarried.

Turning gender expectations on their head is what Joan Jett was born to do, and she says that she learned at a very young age that she wasn’t interested in following women’s rules, which included getting all dressed up in a big white dress and setting off down the aisle. While she has had a ton of high profile relationships over the years, including with names like Billy Idol, John Lydon, and Dee Dee Ramone, she has never been married, and tries to keep her private life, private.

Sometimes women decide they don’t want to have marriage in their lives, and sometimes the universe makes that decision for them. Miranda Richardson has always spoken in favour of marriage and commitment, but it’s never happened for the actress. As far back as 2009, she spoke about looking for her Mr Right, and hopefully starting a family. We hope that love and marriage finds Ms Richardson in the end.

Condoleezza is one of the most powerful women in America – and also one of the coolest. This powerful woman served as the 66th United States Secretary of State and worked under the presidency of George W. Bush. Although her face was plastered across the country, her private life has remained a mystery to us. We do know that she was engaged in the 1970s to Rick Upchurch, but the pair never officially tied the knot. Since then, Condoleezza has remained unmarried.

Sheryl calls herself the old fashioned type, and clearly believes in marriage, even if she’s never managed to find the right person for her. She strongly holds that divorce is something to be avoided at all costs. ““Hey, I would love to get married – I’m still old-fashioned. But I don’t think marriage is the be-all and end-all. It’s better to have three broken engagements than three divorces.” Sheryl has been famously engaged to Lance Armstrong, as well as in relationships with Eric Clapton and actor Owen Wilson.

Often, when a couple says they don’t believe in marriage, it can seem like one of them is more serious about that attitude than the other. With Naomi Watts and Liev Schriber, it always seemed that Liev was the one who didn’t believe in the formalities. The couple were together for eleven years, and even announced that they were engaged with no plans for a marriage. The commitment was not enough for them, and the pair split up. Since then, Naomi has said she isn’t against the idea of marriage with someone else.

Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter were together for almost 15 years, and had two children together, Nell and Billy. They were one of the first celebrity couples to famously eschew the idea of getting married rather than just building a family together, and we were all devastated to hear about the break up. Helena is enjoying being on her own after such a long time coupled up, and we imagine Tim feels the same way.

Jane Austen is another major author on this list and is known for writing some of the most iconic romance novels of all time, including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Mansfield Park. Despite the recurring themes of love within her classic novels, Austen never experienced love for herself before her death. It’s been alleged that she did fall head over heels for a man by the name of Tom Lefroy, but the feelings were not reciprocated.

If you love country music, you’re probably a huge fan of Linda Ronstadt – because who isn’t?! Incredibly, Linda has won a whopping 11 Grammy Awards over the course of her career and has been hugely successful in the business. Because of her rock star status, Linda’s personal life was strewn across the media. Although she dated high-profile men in the industry and was even engaged to George Lucas, she has never tied the knot and remains unmarried to this day.

Dina Meyer started her Hollywood career at the tender age of 9, when she began modeling. Her first real acting role was in 1993 as Lucinda Nicholson in the hit series Beverly Hills, 90210. Although the actress did have a few high profile relationships (with the likes of Shane West, Howard Stern, and Billy Joel), he did her best to keep them as private as possible. As of right now, her relationship status is completely unknown, but it’s known that she has never been married.

Joan of Arc is one of the most famous women in history and often dubbed ‘The Maid of Orleans.’ This French warrior donned male clothing and pretended she was a man during the Hundred Years’ War and was honored with Saintship after her death in 1431. Throughout her life, Joan knew she had a higher purpose. She knew that to change the world, she had to dedicate her life to the cause and didn’t have time for relationships. Because of that, she never married.

Mary Cassatt lived from 1844 until 1926 and is widely remembered for her impact on the world of art and Impressionism. In fact, this American painter became hugely successful and later moved to France to paint women. She painted mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters.Throughout her life, Mary became close to fellow artist Edgar Degas, but the pair were so engrossed in their work and careers that they had no space or time for a romantic relationship or marriage.

Everyone knows Florence Nightingale as the ‘lady with the lamp’ and know that she was one of the most prolific nurses in history. Throughout her career, Florence cared for thousands of wounded soldiers and residents and even laid the foundations for the modern nursing we know today. She later founded her own nursing school and continued to teach others up until her death. Because she was so passionate about her work, Florence saw no need to have a man in her life.

If you’ve read Little Women, you’ll probably recognize this name. Louisa May Alcott was the author of this classic tale and is known for her incredible writing talent. As well as writing numerous novels, Louisa was also a prolific poet and feminist. For much of her life, Alcott campaigned for women’s rights and fought off the oppression of men. Because of that, she felt it necessary to live a life without a husband or partner by her side.

Susan Boyle rose to fame in 2009 when she appeared on the popular British talent show, Britain’s Got Talent. She wowed the judges with her beautiful rendition of the Les Miserables song, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ alongside her quirky personality and anecdotes about her life. She starred on the show when she was 49-years-old, and told the judges that she had never been kissed or had a boyfriend in her life. Since then, she has remained unmarried and single.

If you’re a fan of black and white movies, it’s fair to say that you’re probably a fan of Greta Garbo. This beautiful actress was the star of the screen and had men falling at her feet. However, Greta was not the kind of woman you could win over easily. Instead, she was cold and distant to those around her. Although she was close to marriage, she left her fiancee at the altar and remained unmarried for the rest of her life.

Susan Sarandon is not only an amazing actress, that has gotten her many awards including and Academy Award and a BAFTA, but she is also widely known for her social and political activism. Despite Susan Sarandon’s very serious relationship with Tim Robbins, the couple never tied the knot. These two were together for twenty one years and had two children; Miles and Henry. The couple split up in 2009 after all those years.

Although Jennifer Westfeldt never married Jon Hamm they were together for 18 years, they split up in 2015. The couple never felt the need to marry, as Jon Hamm once put it: “We may not have a piece of paper that says we’re husband and wife, but after 10 years, Jennifer is more than just a girlfriend. What we have is much deeper, and we both know that.” The couple never had children but they did adopt a dog together since they are both big animal lovers.

One of the juiciest secrets in Hollywood for many years was the relationship of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. It comes to no surprise that these two never married since Spencer Tracey never actually divorced his wife Louise Treadwell. Although technically Louise and Spencer were separated, he preferred to keep his romance with Katharine a private matter, however it was an “open secret” in Hollywood. Regardless, Katherine and Spencer maintained their affair for twenty seven years.

Jane Fallon is currently in a very serious relationship with Ricky Gervais. In fact these two have been together since 1982, their relationship has been in the spotlight with many speculating marriage. However, this couple has absolutely no intentions of getting married. Ricky Gervais once stated: “There’s no point in us having an actual ceremony before the eyes of God because there is no God.” But they are still going strong even with no ring in the future.

Before Jessica Lange began her career in acting she was a model for Wilhelmina. After she was discovered she became an amazing actress that has gotten her an incredible amount of prestigious awards, including two academy awards and achieved the Triple Crown of Acting. Jessica Lange was in a relationship for eighteen years with Sam Shepard but they never got married. However, they do  have two children, Samuel and Hannah.

Clara Barton was a nurse during the American Civil War, she was also a teacher and a patent clerk. This nurse is actually the woman who founded the American Red Cross. Clara taught herself nursing care, she never attended nursing school. Clara is famous for her humanitarian work at a time where women rarely participated in anything outside their homes. Clara never got married although she was in a relationship with John J. Elwell and got several proposals. At the time this was extremely rare.

Oprah is known for being non-traditional, and is a role model to hundreds and thousands of women around the globe. But marriage was never for her. While she has been with her partner Stedman Graham for over 30 years, marriage wasn’t something that was ever on the cards for them. In fact, Oprah believes it would have broken them up! “The very idea of what it means to be a wife and the responsibility and sacrifice that carries. I wouldn’t have held that very well.”

Lauryn Hill was paired up with Rohan Marley (the son of legend Bob Marley) for over 15 years before the pair went their separate ways. At the time of the split, Lauryn was pregnant, but unlike her other five children, this one does not have Rohan as its father. Rohan hints towards the idea that he would have got married if Lauryn had been interested, saying that Lauryn was “never ready to walk down the aisle.” As far as we know, Lauryn is still single.

Despite the fact that Ludwig van Beethoven died in 1827, his left an amazing legacy and is still known as the best composer in history. Back in his day he was like a rock star, he was an eligible bachelor attracting all of the women.  Although he never married, he had an “Immoral Beloved”, a woman who was never identified. However Beethoven wrote many letter to his unknown lover: “Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, now and then joyfully, then sadly, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us — I can only live wholly with you or not at all …”

She was orphaned as a child, and this might have affected her opinion on being self-reliant. Her most famous quote about marriage was that she “never wanted to weigh more heavily on a man than a bird.” Did you know that the rumor mill believes that her nephew, Andre Palasse was actually her son? This shows how difficult it was for a woman to be an unmarried mother in her time.

Harper Lee is one of the most prolific female writers of all time and brought us the classic novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. After the success of her first and only book, Harper Lee shied away from the public and led a relatively sheltered life, with no husband or children for company. According to reports, Lee had only ever loved one person – a literary agent who she met when she was younger – but he was a married man, and the feelings weren’t reciprocated.

Dana has been more open than your average celebrity about her views towards marriage. While in the past, marriage was not a “big deal” for her, turning 50 really changed her mind about that. She said that she had time to have “all the fun in the world” in her past. Marriage will probably never be on the cards for the Desperate Housewives actress, as she recently said “the older I get, the more I love my solitude, and I don’t want to give that up.”

Hugh Grant is one of the most charming actors to come out of England, but he has definitely made an impact on the rest of the world. In fact, he has had numerous serious relationships with women – and has even had four children with two different women. However, Hugh has never settled down with one woman. It seems Grant has no intention of getting married either, as he sees no point in signing a piece of paper to prove his love. Fair enough.

It’s fair to say that we’re utterly in love with Owen Wilson. He’s handsome, he’s funny, and says ‘Wow’ too much – but we can forgive him that. Over the course of his career, Owen has dated numerous celebrities, including Kate Hudson and Sheryl Crow, and he’s even had children with two different women, but he’s never got married. Wilson himself has noted that he had always wanted to be married by the time he was 30, but seems to have missed the mark.

Let’s be honest, Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood. After his astounding performance in Titanic, he has been etched into the hearts of many women across the world. Over the past few decades, Leo has proven that he is a true ladies man and has dated numerous Victoria’s Secret models and actresses such as Bridget Hall and Gisele. However, Leo seems pretty content with his lothario lifestyle and has yet to settle down with his dream woman.

After years in the spotlight, many people began to question why the popular actor, Kevin Spacey, had never tied the knot. Over the course of his career, Spacey has been linked to numerous famous women, including April Winchell, Dianne Dreyer, and Helen Hunt. However, none of these relationships lasted very long, and he had never managed to settle down with any of them. In 2017, many of these questions were answered when Kevin Spacey came out as homosexual.

Ricky Gervais is one of the few Englishmen who has managed to make it big across the pond. Thanks to his comedy sketch shows, Gervais has managed to build up a major fan following – but many people do wonder why he’s not married. Well, Ricky has actually been in a long-term relationship with Jane Fallon for 32-years and doesn’t plan on tying the knot anytime soon. He notes that this is because he is not religious, so does not see the point!

Over the course of his career, John Cusack has made a major name for himself. He has starred in the likes of Being John Malkovich, High Fidelity, The Raven and Hot Tub Tub Time Machine. Although he has proven his acting talents, John has managed to keep his private life on the down-low. Despite this, we do know he has dated numerous famous faces over the years, but not one who was special enough to settle down with. Ouch.

As a stand-up comedian, an actor, a writer, a director, a voice artist, and a producer, Gary Shandling has pretty much done it all…except getting married. The famous celebrity’s career spanned three decades, until he passed away in 2016 from a massive heart attack. Shandling was engaged at one point to a Playboy Model, Linda Doucett, from 1987 to 1994, when the couple split on pretty bad terms.

Jeremy Pivon’s Hollywood career has been very successful and very varied for years now. He has appeared in multiple sitcoms such as Seinfeld, the Larry Sanders Show, and Ellen. Seth MacFarlane is one of the biggest names in the world of comedy and film production – and it seems there’s nothing he can’t do. He’s an actor, a comedian, a singer, AND a filmmaker, and is quietly sitting on a cool $30 million net worth (not bad, ey?). However, Seth has yet to find a woman to share his wealth and success with. Although he dated Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke for around six months in 2012, he has since remained unmarried.

Bill Maher is the renowned stand-up comedian that has made political satire and a media empire. He has also written many books, has appeared in several talk shows and made the documentary Religulous. Maher has never married, in a Rolling stones interview he said, “I always compare marriage to communism. They’re both institutions that don’t conform to human nature, so you’re going to end up with lying and hypocrisy.”

If you’re into your politics, you’ve probably heard of Janet Napolitano. She is a woman of many talents, and has served as Secretary of Homeland Security and Attorney General of Arizona, and has even worked as a lawyer and university administrator. Janet has made huge headway for women in politics but has never married. Many are unsure whether her decision to stay unmarried is because of her sexual orientation or because of her intense commitment to her job.

If you’ve watched any ‘90s movie ever – there’s a high chance Matt Dillon was in it. Yep, this guy was one of the most in-demand actors of that era and has since continued to have a successful career as an actor, director, and film actor. Although Dillon had a pretty high-profile relationship with the one and only Cameron Diaz in 1995, the couple broke up in 1998 (much to our dismay). Since then, he has dated other women but remains unmarried.

Queen Latifah is one of the fiercest women in show businesses, and probably one of the most independent as well. She was in a long-term relationship with Eboni Nichols, but the pair have since split up. She has no desire to get married unless she finds a partner who truly deserves it. With this amount of self-respect and confidence in mind, she bought herself two wedding rings, claiming that the right person will come along and earn having her as a wife, and then they can take the ring off of her finger to have it. Wow!

Tyra is another incredible powerhouse women who is proving that a marriage certificate is not the only way to prove love, romance, and commitment. She has one child, whose name is York Banks Asla, with her partner Erik Asla, and the couple seem totally happy in unwedded bliss. As an incredibly beautiful and powerful role model to thousands of young women the world over, we think Tyra is one of the best.

Any Parenthood fan worth their salt knows that Lauren Graham has been dating co-star Peter Krause since 2010, making them one of the most adorable co-star romances out there. Just like Lorelai Gilmore, marriage wasn’t high on her priority list when Ellen quizzed her about her marital status back in 2014. She didn’t see much difference between the way they are as partners, and adding on the marriage certificate. “Aren’t we married already really?” She commented.

Despite being linked to some of Hollywoods most eligible bachelors, Winona has never been married before. She has dated Keanu Reeves, Matt Damon, Chris Noth and even Val Kilmer! She did get a bit further towards her wedding day than some of the others on this list, as she has an engagement to the one and only Johnny Depp under her belt! Unfortunately, the wedding day never arrived. She says that her parents’ example makes it tough, “When your parents are madly in love for 45 years, your standards are really high. “

Diane Keaton’s little black book would be something most women would pay good money for. Her past relationships include Jack Nicholson, Keanu Reeves, and Warren Beaty, including some heart strings still tugged by her romance with Al Pacino, who she still refers to as “the one who got away.” Despite this romantic past, Keaton is strongly opposed to marriage, saying that she could never, ever imagine a life shared together with another person.

Al Pacino is one of the most famous men in Hollywood, and we can imagine he’s had women falling at his feet for decades. Over the course of his career, he has had many serious relationships with fellow celebs, including Diane Keaton, Beverly D’Angelo, and Penelope Ann Miller, but has never tied the knot. Pacino has said that he wanted to get married but has yet to find the right person for him. Where do we sign up?

This gorgeous lady has no trouble telling it like it is. “I’m not like anti-marriage or the institution, like for other people. I love the idea of a union but I think, it’s a very old-fashioned, archaic kind of thing. We did it for land originally. How unromantic is that?” Unromantic or not, she still has somehow managed to hold down the one and only Ryan Gosling, and the couple have two daughters together. We don’t know much about this tennis superstar’s views on marriage, but we do know quite a lot about her long-term partner Enrique Iglesias.
