What Do Your Favorite ’80s Fitness Stars Look Like Now?

Ah, the ’80s fitness craze. Olivia Newton-John was our muse, Fabio was our crush, and Arnie was our inspiration. But do you ever wonder what your favorite ‘80s fitness stars are up to now? Are they still deep in the workout scene, or have they moved on to bigger and better (but maybe less active) hobbies? Well luckily, we have the answers right here…

Jake Seinfeld – Then

Jake Seinfeld was like the fitness god of the ‘80s – and we all wanted a ‘Body by Jake’ (even though we never actually got one). Back in the day, Jake was responsible for the major influx of fitness fanatics, thanks to his drive and determination to create new and exciting ways to work out. In fact, he was the brains behind the popular FitTV 24-hour lifestyle network, that helped thousands of people across America to stay motivated and exercise.

Jake Seinfeld – Now

After realizing that he had a knack for fitness and business, Jake Seinfeld has continued to grow as an entrepreneur (and it’s fair to say he’s making a heck load of Benjamins). He soon became the CEO and Chairman of his fitness brand, Jake Global, and has since made it his mission to provide the world with products and merchandise that will help people live a healthy lifestyle. In recent years, he has created the FitOrbit 2.0 training platform.

Olivia Newton-John – Then

Although Olivia Newton-John was largely known for playing the naughty-but-nice Pink Lady, Sandy Olsen, in Grease (AKA the best movie ever). However, she also garnered a lot of attention for her ‘Let’s Get Physical’ music video – in which, she pranced around and told her fans to literally get physical to the dulcet tones of her voice. Of course, we obviously obliged and donned our pink leg warmers. Nevertheless, Olivia soon became the cover girl for ‘80s fitness and became an exercise icon.

Olivia Newton-John – Now

Of course, we all still know and love Olivia Newton-John, and we love to keep up with her recent career moves. Although she’s no longer getting physical, Olivia is still playing her music to adoring fans who all want to see the four-time Grammy Award winner in the flesh. Unfortunately, her health has taken a bit of a blow recently, as she has since been re-diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. Sending love your way, Olivia!

Lou Ferrigno – Then

Lou Ferrigno didn’t always want to be a fitness trainer or fitness icon. Instead, he had a rough childhood and found himself taking regular, minimum-wage jobs to pay the bills. However, he soon found solace in exercise and worked incredibly hard to take part in bodybuilding competitions – where he ultimately won the IFBB Mr. America title. During the ‘80s, he made a name for himself when he was cast in The Incredible Hulk as Hulk himself. Those muscles, though.

Lou Ferrigno lived a normal life until he started to train as a bodybuilder and became an actor

Lou Ferrigno – Now

After his ‘80s fame, many believed that Lou Ferrigno would simply fall back into normality and go back to working dead-end jobs. However, Ferrigno had the determination and the drive to continue his fitness, and continue auditioning for roles. His hard work paid off as he was later cast in movies and TV shows such as I Love You, Man, Hercules and The King of Queens. Ferrigno has also used his strength to act as a police department deputy in California and Ohio.

Lou Ferrigno continued to work as an actor and has even worked as a police department deputy

Greg Smithey – Then

If you grew up in the ‘80s, you probably spent most of your time trying to get buns of steel. However, getting a tight tooshie on your own was pretty difficult, so you enlisted the help of Greg Smithey and his workout video, The Original Buns of Steel. This fitness and aerobics instructor focused primarily on the lower half of your body during his workouts. Altogether, a whopping 1 million copies of this workout were sold on VHS.

Grey Smithey was the creator of The Original Buns of Steel workout video

Greg Smithey – Now

After the release of The Original Buns of Steel, Greg Smithey seemed to disappear from the world of fitness. Although he did later re-release his workout video on DVD, he didn’t release any more fitness videos. Instead, he retreated from the limelight and has not been seen since. We’re not sure what he’s up to nowadays, but 2017 seems like it would be Grey Smithey’s era – as every man and his dog now want Buns of Steel!

Greg Smithey has not been seen since the release of his workout video in the ‘80s

Jane Fonda – Then

Let’s be honest, when we heard that Jane Fonda was releasing a workout video, we knew we just HAD to buy it…even if we didn’t own a VCR. Yep, we bought a VCR along with the rest of the world simply to work out with the one and only Fonda. The Jane Fonda Workout proved so popular, it sold over 1 million units and inspired her to release 22 more videos throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. Just because she could.

Jane Fonda – Now

After the success of her ‘80s workouts, Jane Fonda decided that she wanted to take a break from the fitness limelight. So, she continued her acting career and focused on other career paths for the next 15 years, before making an almighty return to the word of exercise in 2010. Fonda released her next set of fitness videos straight to DVD, and once again proved that she was the queen of fitness. Now at 79-years-old, she’s still rocking it…

Jane Fonda took a 15-year break from fitness videos but returned in 2010

Cher – Then

It’s fair to say that there really isn’t anything Cher can do. In the ‘80s, Cher was making a huge name for herself in the world of music as a singer, dancer, performer and all-around legend (not that we’re jealous or anything). Although she was a major fitness mogul in the ‘80s with the leg warmers and the headbands, she truly rocked the fitness world in 1991 when she released her best-selling book, Forever Fit: The Lifetime Plan for Health, Fitness and Beauty.

Cher was a major music icon in the ‘80s and released a fitness book in 1991

Cher – Now

Yep, Cher is still the most fabulous woman in the world. Nowadays, Cher is still a leading figure in the world of music and makes an appearance at nearly every music and celebrity event. This gives us Cher-fanatics the chance to check out whether she really has been ‘Forever Fit’ – and we can categorically say that she has. In fact, at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, the 71-year-old announced that she can still do a five-minute plank. Wowza.

Cher is now 71-years-old and can still do a five-minute plank

John Travolta – Then

Let’s be honest, John Travolta has made it pretty clear that he is the Jack of all trades – and it’s also fair to say that we all had a MAJOR crush on him during the ‘80s. After the success of the 1978 smash hit, Grease, Travolta proved that he wasn’t just an all-singing, all-dancing hunk while at Rydell High. Instead, he donned his shorts, joined Jamie Lee Curtis in Perfect and sweat it out in the fitness studio.

John Travolta proved that he was also a fitness fanatic after his role in Perfect

John Travolta – Now

Although John Travolta is not quite as toned as he was three decades ago, he is still looking pretty good for a 63-year-old (and he’s still rockin’ that Danny Zuko haircut we all know and love). He is no longer turning his talents to the world of fitness, but Travolta is still acting today. Since the ‘80s, this Academy Award and Golden Globe winner has appeared in major motion pictures such as Hairspray, Pulp Fiction, and Wild Hogs.

Since the ‘80s, John Travolta has focused on his acting career and has won major awards

Arnold Schwarzenegger – Then

Okay, could we really have an article about ‘80s fitness stars and NOT include Arnie?! We think not. It’s no secret that Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the most famous athletes in history, and made a name for herself as Mr. Europe when he was just 19-years-old. He later went on to win Mr. Olympia (which is a pretty big deal). During the ‘80s, wrote columns in the popular magazines, Muscle & Fitness and Flex, about health, fitness and working out.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – Now

Nowadays, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still one of the biggest names in health, fitness and acting – and has used his impressive physique to land him epic movie roles in the likes of Terminator, Kindergarten Cop, Predator and many other high-octane movies. As if he wasn’t cool enough, he later became the Governor of California. Nowadays, he still maintains a strict workout schedule and is a fitness legacy. In fact, he even created his own bodybuilding competition! That’s dedication.

Arnold Schwarzenegger used his muscles and skills to become a popular actor

Richard Simmons – Then

Let’s be honest; there’s no way you could forget about Richard Simmons. As one of the most iconic fitness stars of the ‘80s, Simmons would rarely be seen without a sparkly outfit or perfectly quaffed hair. This eccentric fitness instructor first rose to fame when he documented his own weight-loss journey and then continued to help others do the same in his own personal gym. Richard specifically targeted his workout videos to those who loved everything retro, through Sweatin’ to the Oldies.

Richard Simmons – Now

Nowadays, Richard Simmons is still recognizable, because he has barely changed – and we’re loving this look. He still rocks the quaffed hair (although it’s now a little gray), and is always photographed in his eccentric gym wear. He now runs a successful fitness gym in Los Angeles and still quietly remains in the public eye, through his TV appearances, his fitness endorsements and his roles in TV commercials. Something tells us we haven’t seen the last of him just yet!

Richard Simmons is still recognizable today and runs a successful gym in Los Angeles

Mr. T – Then

“I pity the fool” is still a commonly used household phrase, despite the fact that it’s already a few decades old. Lawrence Tureaud, otherwise known as Mr. T, is famous for his hairstyle (which he based off of a Mandinka warrior’s mohawk), his gold chains, and his aggressive attitude towards weakness. His workout routines were sought after by many trying to achieve his big, bulky shape. He was an actor, professional wrestler, and all-around tough guy.

Mr. T – Now

Nowadays, Mr. T is still making appearances here and there in movies and TV. His most recent feature was as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, as well as a few voice acting roles in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and he Simpsons. In 2014, he was awarded a very big honor by being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Cathy Lee Crosby – Then

Cathy Lee Crosby was one of the most talented women of the ‘80s. Not only was she an incredibly talented actress, but she was also a blonde beauty that caught the attention of fans across the world. However, unlike many of the other women on this list, Cathy Lee Crosby did not thank the gym or intense exercise to her physique. Instead, she had tennis to thank for her toned body. In fact, Cathy eventually played at Wimbledon!

Cathy Lee Crosby was an actress, but also a professional tennis player

Cathy Lee Crosby – Now

After a successful tennis career during the ‘80s, Cathy Lee Crosby decided to retire from the sport and focus on more important aspects of her life. She soon became a prominent actress and appeared in movies and TV shows such as Wonder Woman, That’s Incredible and Ablaze. Nowadays, she is trying to live a relatively quiet life away from the cameras – which is pretty hard when has been embroiled in numerous high-profile lawsuits and personal issues over the course of your career.

June Jones – Then

June Jones was a huge fitness star in Australia, as she was a cofounder of Aerobics Oz Style, a very successful fitness program that aired from 1982 all the way through 2005, with 4,500 episodes in total. The show had instructors of every age and gender, as it was meant to have something for everybody. The show gained so much popularity that TISM, an Australian band, made a music video parody of it in 1998.

June Jones – Now

June has taken a few steps back from the world of television fitness to raise her two children and just enjoy life. However, she has kept up her fitness game and still looks fantastic after all these years. In October of 2017, she actually met up with her fellow Aerobics Oz Style instructors for a reunion show. The girls dressed up in their most glamorous 80s workout gear, and got to it as if nothing had changed.

Billy Blanks – Then

Billy Blanks made a big name for himself in the fitness world in the late 80’s with his extremely successful Tae Bo (a combination of Taekwando and boxing) workout program. He started out opening a fitness gym in Los Angeles and ended up with some pretty elite clientele, including Paula Abdul. With his gym’s popularity growing, he began producing workout videos to be sold to the masses.

Billy Blanks – Now

Nowadays Billy is still keeping up with his fitness routines. He continues to make workout videos for YouTube, and has even starred in a number of cameos in movies and television shows such as Driving Force, Low Blow, and The Fairly Odd Parents. After a 33 year marriage to one of his former students, Billy filed for divorce and ended up marrying his Japanese translator, Tomoko Sato. The couple had their first child together in 2007, and Billy adopted her other two daughters from a previous marriage.

Bess Motta – Then

When Bess Motta came onto our screens in the ‘80s, we were astounded – because this Canadian could act, sing, dance, and exercise as if her life depended on it. Bess was one of the stars of the hugely popular television series called The 20 Minute Workout. Although the show brought in thousands of viewers, it only ran from 1983 until 1984, but that was enough time to get Bess established in the world of fame and celebrity.

Bess Motta – Now

After her time on The 20 Minute Workout, Bess tried her hand at acting and soon landed herself roles in major TV shows and movies, including The Terminator, New Monkees, and The Home Show. Unfortunately, her fame dwindled fairly quickly after her foray into the world of acting, and she disappeared from the public eye. She re-emerged for an appearance on a podcast for Ken Reid but has since disappeared once again. Hopefully, we’ll see her again soon!

Arlaine Wright – Then

From an early age, Arlaine Wright was always acted. She took ballet classes, she became a cheerleader, and she later became an aerobics teacher. This foray into the world of fitness and aerobics got this Canadian fitness instructor a role in The 20 Minute Workout TV series. Like Bess, Arlaine proved hugely popular and became the face of the show and home aerobics, until the show was sadly pulled off the air in 1984. But that wasn’t the end of Arlaine!

Arlaine Wright – Now

After her stint on The 20 Minute Workout, Arlaine continued to dominate the world of aerobics and was employed by Reebok Canada to be the head of their ‘Aerobic Instructors’ Program. She worked at the company for several years before disappearing from the public eye. Like Arlaine, she tried to re-emerge to become a fully-fledged actress, but her efforts were thwarted, and we’re unsure what she’s up to now. Wonder if she still wears leotards and legwarmers everywhere?

After The 20 Minute Workout ended, Arlaine Wright went to work for Reebok Canada

Jamie Lee Curtis -Then

Jamie Lee Curtis owes a lot of her career to the fitness industry. Despite her efforts to make it big in the world of Hollywood, Curtis initially struggled to land any major roles. Then, she was offered a role in the popular 1985 movie, Perfect. This film followed the life of those who attended a health club in Los Angeles, and Curtis donned her leotard and headband for the role. She soon became an icon for the world of fitness.

Jamie Lee Curtis landed her first major role in Perfect, a fitness movie

Jamie Lee Curtis – Now

After donning her fitness clothes for Perfect, Jamie Lee Curtis left her public exercising days behind her and continued to focus on her acting career. And it’s a good thing she did because we don’t know whether we could live in a world without Jamie Lee Curtis on our screens! She has since made a name for herself as the ‘Queen of Scream’ and has appeared in numerous horror movies, as well as major Hollywood blockbusters.

Demi Moore – Then

Demi Moore began her Hollywood career at a very young age. In fact, the young star began working out for a celebrity bod in her teens. When she took this picture, she was only 16 (though she told the crew that she was 18). Demi went on to star in a whole range of cinema and series, eventually staring in GI Jane, which caused her to adapt an entirely new work out.

Demi Moore – Now

Nowadays, Demi Moore is still in the acting game, and still has one of the best bodies in show business. The now 55 year old actress has somehow found the fountain of youth, because she looks just as good as she did in the 80s! Of course, the stunning actress is still working out hard-core to keep up with her gorgeous figure, and she has probably added a skin routine to the mix as well. One thing’s for sure, she took her 80s workout experience with her into the 21st century.

Susan Powter – Then

Susan Powter was quite an inspirational and controversial figure in her youth. She was born in Australia, but moved to America at the age of 10.  In her 20s, Susan became interested in physical fitness and health. She became very famous in the 90s, most known for her catch phrase “Stop The Insanity.”

She has her own website which is full of her blogs on healthy diets, the right kind of exercise, and organically grown foods.  Susan lives in New Mexico in what she describes as an “Earth Ship.” She hosts virtual sessions that you can sign up for to learn about her own weight loss transformation, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Cynthia Kereluk – Then

During the ‘80s, there was a huge fitness trend in America – but there was also a bigger trend just north of the border in Canada. We were first introduced to Cynthia in 1984 when she was crowned Miss Canada (wit-woo) and she was soon overrun with fans asking her how she kept in shape and maintained a healthy lifestyle. So, Cynthia decided to help us all out and release her own fitness video, Everyday Workout, which proved popular in Canada and America.

Cynthia Kereluk – Now

After her claim to fame in the ‘80s, Cynthia Kereluk’s career seemed to tumble in a downward spiral. Although she managed to bag herself small roles in minor movies such as Mark of Cain, Overnight, and The Pink Chiquitas, her status had sadly diminished within pop culture. Nevertheless, she still maintains a healthy lifestyle today, keeps up with her exercise routine, and ensures she spends most of her time in the wide outdoors with her rocker hubby, Paul Rodgers.

Nevertheless, it’s fair to say that this look did him wonders because Tony Little has made millions of dollars from his fitness infomercials. If he could have muscles like that, so could we! (Disclaimer: We’ve never had muscles like him).

Tony Little was famous for selling fitness products through infomercials

Tony Little had his heyday in the ‘80s but struggled to connect with viewers and fitness fanatics as the years go on. However, he has not had an easy time of it recently – even with a cool $4 million in the bank. Nowadays, Tony Little’s character is often bullied and parodied by others in the fitness industry, and he is often mocked. But Tony doesn’t let this get to him and is now living a chilled life as a personal trainer to the stars.

Tamilee Webb – Then

If you ever wanted to feel bad about how you looked in a leotard, you just had to watch Tamilee on the FitTv channel – because this lady knew how to rock a leotard (and we were pretty jealous). Tamilee Webb rose to fame through fitness infomercials before landing her own TV series called Buns of Steel and Abs of Steel. She later went on to sell home workout videos and racked up a whopping $10 million in sales. We’ll take those numbers.

Three decades after she reigned supreme on our television screens, Tamilee Webb looks younger than ever (does she have a time machine?!) She puts her physique and her success down to her devotion to exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. However, it’s much more than moving for her. Tamilee actually has a masters degree in exercise science and knows exactly what she needs to do to make her body tick – and she’s still passing this knowledge onto her fans.

Lizzie Webb – Then

But she also was called Mad Lizzie because of her get up on television. The fitness fanatic would work out in her pajamas with her hair wild from sleep, and she wouldn’t care at all. Rivaling The Green Goddess, Mad Lizzie also appeared on Good Morning Britain in the 80s, during the same time as Diana Moran’s Green Goddess.

Lizzie Webb – Now

He’s also said he much prefers outdoor adventures and exercising outside as he finds the gym to be boring and outside to be much more ‘inspiring’.

Lenny Kravitz – Now
